Winternationals Profiled by Carolinas Golf Association
This article was distributed to all members of the Carolinas Golf Association in fall 2011.
The Winternational Junior Series, a grouping of eight 36-hole stroke play events for high school boys and girls, will begin its 18th consecutive season on November 12-13, 2011 on Tom Fazio's Centennial Course #8 at Pinehurst Country Club. This series will conduct tournaments over six of the championship courses including twice on the famed Donald Ross course #2. All events are submitted to the Junior Golf Scoreboard, SCJGA and TYGA for their rankings systems.
The series, which began in the fall of 1994, has introduced more than nineteen hundred teens to Pinehurst. Many members of the Winternationals have gone on to play professionally and at the college level. A few of the former members are Webb Simpson, winner of the Wyndham Championship, Jason Dufner, runner-up at the PGA Championship, Johnson Wagner, two time PGA Tour Champion, Jason Kokrak, currently # 4 on the Nationwide Tour money list, and David Chung, Stanford University Junior and 2010 North and South Amateur Champion. Many other young players are not only successful in the game of golf but have also excelled in the classroom and their business careers.
Membership is open for the fall and winter season and all may apply at the website www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com. The nominal membership fee guarantees your entry into any or all events in which you would like to compete. In addition, this fee will also give to you a fifty dollar (50.00) discount on the first Winternational Series event you wish to play.
Peter deYoung, long time Pinehurst Country Club member, founded this series in 1994 and is still the series Chairman. His background includes Tournament Director of over fifty PGA Tour, Champion Tour, and Nationwide Tour events. He was also the Championship Director of the US Women's Open (2000) and the US Amateur (1983). deYoung began managing golf events at Pinehurst as the Director of the North and South Championships (1972-1976) and Manager of the World Open (1973-1976).
