Scots Join in on Winternationals
Village of Pinehurst, NC
February 10, 2019
In a season that has produced wet soggy conditions for each event, the Winternational Juniors finally caught a break. Little rain over the last week and half along with warm sunny conditions has finally allowed courses in the Sandhills to dry out including Pinehurst No. 4 site of Event #6. Nearly 60 high school boys and girls competed on the newly re-constructed No. 4 course. Re-designed by Gil Hanse, the course now has a similar look and feel to its sister course No. 2.
Joining the Winternational Jr. Series members this weekend were 14 high school boys and girls from Scotland. The East Lothian Junior Golf League helped coordinate and support a trip for the 2nd year in a row for their top order of merit players. Their 10-day trip will be spent entirely in the Pinehurst area and provided a unique opportunity not only for the players from Scotland but for our Winternational members as well.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Boys Division Daniel Adkins of Holly Springs, NC came from four shots back after the first round to capture the win. The sophomore who attends Apex Friendship High scored a fine 38+36=74 in Sunday’s final round. Adkins finished birdie-birdie to eked out a single shot victory over Ryan Macri of Wake Forest, NC and Cardinal Gibbons HS. Macri’s card on Sunday was highlighted by an eagle three on the 2nd hole and two deuces on the front nine par 3’s. In third place was Jennings Glenn of Raleigh, whose 82+78 total.
The Junior Senior Boys was captured by Chase Clayton of Locust, NC 74+74=148. Clayton, last year’s player of the year, won his third title this series in as many tries. The West Stanley H.S. senior highlighted his weekend with a three under par 33 in Saturday’s opening round. Runner-up position was captured by Thomas Maye of Weddington, NC. Maye who is also a senior shot 75+77=152. Tied for third position were Harrison Wierse of Wilmington, NC and Malachy Hayward of Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Girls Division saw our sixth different champion in the first six events. Mallory Fobes, the co-player of the year last year, won her first event of this series shooting an 82+73=155. The total was good enough for a six shot win over Mara Hirtle of Pinehurst. Fobes was two shots clear after the first round and her one over par 73 on Sunday cemented her victory. Tied for third were two residents of nearby Southern Pines. Katelyn Kenthack and Jaclyn Kenzel who both shot 166 totals.
