New Year New Courses for Winternationals

Village of Pinehurst, NC

January 6, 2019

The Winternational contestants rang in their first even of the year on two new courses. Saturday’s first round was held at Pinehurst No. 9. Acquired by Pinehurst in 2014, the Jack Nicklaus design brought the Resorts total up to nine courses and was the first time the Winternational Junior Series added it to the rotation. Sunday’s final round was contested on the newly re-designed Course No. 4. Re-opened in September, golfs hottest new designer Gil Hanse kept a lot of the old routing but re-worked the entire property into a more natural Sandhills feel. Both courses proved to be a great test of golf for our juniors. Although on the warmer side, strong winds kept temperatures feels in the 40s during the opening round while Sunday greeted players with sunny skies and temperatures flirting with 70 degrees.

Winternational newcomer Megan Kanaby of Chapel Hill, NC was victorious by two shots shooting a 76+79=155. Kanaby a senior from Cardinal Gibbons HS was tied after Saturday opening round and shot 79 Sunday for her victory. Kanaby had two birdies on Sunday’s round but her double bogey on the final hole brought the margin of victory much closer. Runner-up was Mallory Fobes of East Bend, NC and in third was Angelique Seymour of Fayetteville. Fobes and Seymour were the 2017-2018 Co-Divisions Players of the Year.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Andrew Wood of Greensboro, won his first event of the series by two shots over Owen Swavely of Mooresville, NC. Wood shot a consistent 75+75=150 and his par 36 back nine on Sunday spelled the difference between himself and Swavely. Swavely is a senior a Lake Norman High and was both an All-American from this series last year as well as winning the Shulby Sportsmanship award. Robert Dudeck, III of Williamsburg, VA finished third with an 81+74=155. His 74 captured low round of the day on Pinehurst No. 4.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Ryan Macri of Wake Forest, NC competed in his first Winternational event and shot a fantastic 69 in the opening round. The Cardinal Gibbons sophomore followed that round with a 75 on Sunday for a 144 total. In the runner-up position was Colling Dutton of Foxfire, NC. Dutton, also a sophomore at Pinecrest HS shot 75 on Sunday and tied for the low round in his division. In third place was David Oliver, IV from Pageland, SC. Oliver shot 78+77=155.
