Final Winternational Junior Series Season Event Highlights Carolina Players
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
The final event of the Winternational Junior Series eighteenth season was played Saturday and Sunday on Ellis Maples’ designed Pinehurst No. 5 course. The on-again off-again rain did not stop the first round on the par 72 course, which played 6640 yards for all competitors. Round two was sunny but cool temperatures, and windy conditions prevailed throughout play which highlighted some of the best junior golfers the Carolinas have to offer.
In the Junior-Senior Division, Winternational veteran Jonathan DiIanni took low round and first place with a sterling 69-68—137. DiIanni, a Kernersville resident, has signed to attend Purdue University on scholarship where he will play on the Purdue Men’s Golf Team. His four birdies in round one were topped by seven birdies in round two, six on the front nine, and an eagle on the par five seventeenth hole. The win, DiIanni’s third of the season, cinched for him Junior-Senior Division Player of the Year honors and a place on the All-American Team.
In second place, nine shots behind DiIanni, was Greg Mauldin of Archdale, Clay Brown of Davidson, and Nick Dorton. Mauldin, a junior at Westchester Country Day School, managed to score two under par in round one but fell to a four over score in round two to take second place in the Junior-Senior Division. A William A. Hough High School Junior, Brown fell out of contention because of two bogies and a double bogey at the end of round two. Replacing Brown was Chandler White of Clemmons, who moved into third place with consistent play through both rounds (77-76—153). Fourth place went to Dorton of Anderson, SC. Mauldin and Dorton, Winternational veterans, also made the All-American Team this season.
An exciting sudden-death playoff capped the Freshman Sophomore Division. Only five shots separated to top five players at the end of round one. Those five battled it out through round two, with Thomas Walsh of High Point and Court Settle of Raleigh both finishing five over par at the end of 36 holes. A Westchester Country Day School Freshman, Walsh prevailed in the three-hole sudden-death playoff when he scored his third consecutive overtime par.
Settle, whose four birdies in round one set him up for the win, struggled in round two, carding five bogies and a double bogey, but managed to match Walsh with a final score of 149 to put him in the playoff. His second place finish was one shot ahead of third place Ethan Mead of Charlotte, and two shots ahead of Alex Smalley of Wake Forest, who finished fourth. Smalley was named Freshman-Sophomore Player of the Year and made the All-American Team along with fellow Winternational veterans Settle and Mead.
The nineteenth annual Winternational Junior Series will commence in November of 2012 with a nine-event series.
