Large Field of Teens Compete at Historic Pinehurst #2
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
The Winternational Junior Series of Golf, in its eighteenth consecutive year at Pinehurst, played its seventh of eight tournaments for high school boys and girls. The venues for this week’s championship were the famed Donald Ross No. 2 course and the Pinehurst No. 1 course. The weather played a major role on both days; Saturday’s first round which was played on the No. 2 course saw sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60’s, whereas 24-hours later the seventy high school students were met with driving rain and temperatures hovering near 40 degrees. Because of Sunday’s weather the final round was shortened to 9 holes making the championship a 27-hole affair.
In the Junior/Senior Division a Fayetteville, NC, resident and Winternational Junior Series veteran Trey Guy (75-36-111) was victorious. The Junior from Terry Sanford High School trailed over night leader Jonathan DiIanni (73-39-112) of Kernersville by two shots. DiIanni, was the first round leader on the strength of his eagle two which came on the Par 4 18 Hole. Guy and DiIanni, were paired together in the final round and traded the lead several times until Guy birdied the final two holes for a one shot victory. Tied for third place was Jackson Spires also of Fayetteville and Terry Sanford High School (79-37—116) and Clay Brown of Davidson, NC, (78-38-116). Tied for fifth were Zachary Boe of Bluffton, SC (79-38-117) and Austin Morrison of Charlotte, NC (77-40-117).
The Freshman/Sophomore Division was dominated by two Gainesville, GA, under-classman. Grant Lasseter (74-39-113) a sophomore needed one extra hole to defeat fellow high school golf team teammate Nathan Williams (76-37-113). Williams, a freshman pulled even with his teammate on the on Sunday when he made up three shots on the final three holes. Lasseter, prevailed in the sudden death play-off when Williams three-putted the hole. In third place from Wheaton, IL, was Will Kelly (79-37-116) and four competitors shared the fourth position. They were Timothy Conover (Holly Springs), Spencer Ralston (Gainesville, GA), Gray Townsend (Winston Salem, NC) and Thomas Walsh (High Point, NC).
The Girls Division was captured by a former Player of the Year and All-American team member Brooke Kochavar of Glen Ellyn, IL (82-40-122). Kochavar defeated Danna Gattone (88-39-127) of Addison, IL on the strength of her opening round on Pinehurst No. 2. In third place was Lacy Mirovich (99-40-139) of Mt. Pleasant, NC.
The final event of the season in the Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will be held on March 3-4. The series will return to the Pinehurst No. 5 course. Following the tournament the series Player of the Year and All-American honors will be awarded.
