DiIanni and Pasupa Victorious on Pinehurst #5

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC

The Winternatnational Junior Series at Pinehurst, an eight tournament series for high school boys and girls held its 5th championship this weekend on the Pinehurst No. 5 golf course. The weather played an important role as the temperature on both Saturday and Sunday never reached the 50 degree mark. Twenty-six of the more than one-hundred members took part on the 6640 yard par 72 layout.
Jonathan DiIanni, a senior from Kernersville NC, was victorious in the Junior/Senior Division. DiIanni (74-74—148), a senior at Westchester Country Day School, won his second championship in two years. This week’s win over Trey Guy (76-74—150)of Fayetteville, NC was highlighted by an eagle 3 on his 17th hole which propelled him to the two-shot win. DiIanni will attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN in the fall of 2012 and hopes to play for the Boilermakers golf squad. Guy, also a former winner on the Winternational Series, took the lead from the eventual champion but could not match DiIanni’s birdie-eagle-par finish. In third place was A.T. Cashwell of Concord, NC with a 79-79—158 and in solo fourth was Winternational newcomer Zachary Boe (79-80—158) of Bluffton, South Carolina.   

The Freshman/Sophomore division took one extra hole to determine the champion for this event. Chakka Pasupa (79-80—159) of Charlotte, NC, birdied the first extra hole to defeat Blake Wagoner (80-79—159) of Cornelius, NC, after they deadlocked with 159 two day totals. The long-hitting Pasupa of Charlotte County Day School, was one shot off the first round lead but worked his way up the leaderboard until he double bogeyed the last hole to fall into a tie with Wagoner. His birde on the sudden death first hole was the result of a 295 yard drive and a wedge to two-feet for the victory, Wagoner, an 8th grader, made his initial trip to Pinehurst an unforgettable one. In third place from Cary, NC was James Mishoe (78-82—160) who missed the playoff by one shot. Joint forth place was shared by Austin Harrill (82-80—162) of Hickory, NC and Will Kelly (85-77—162) of Wheaton, IL. Kelly also garnered the low round trophy with Court Settle (Raleigh, NC) as each shot 77 in Sunday’s final round.
