William Gordon wins Event #4 in extra holes
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
The fourth event of the Eighteenth Annual Winternational Junior Tournament Series at Pinehurst concluded Sunday following two days of competition on Pinehurst Nos. 2 and No.1. Saturday’s round was played under cloudy skies, but Sunday dawned sunny. Both days’ high temperatures were cool, in the upper 50’s. The famed Pinehurst No. 2, venue of the 1999, 2005, and 2014 U.S. Opens and 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship, was utilized in the opening round on Saturday, and the original Pinehurst course, No. 1, was played in round two.
William Gordon, of Davidson and Alex Smalley, of Wake Forest needed two extra holes to determine the Freshman-Sophomore Division champion. Gordon (77-71—148) who was five shots off the lead after round one came on strong in round two to tie Smalley (72-76—148) at the end of regulation. On the par 5 17th hole of course No. 1 Gordon secured his win with a two putt birdie.
The newly renovated Pinehurst No. 2 proved quite a challenge for the junior golfers. Scores well above par were the round one norm. However, in round two Blake Fiest of Huntersville, and Eric Edwards of Salisbury battled it out for the remaining leader board top finishes. Fiest (77-72—149), who was third after round one, and Edwards (76-74—150) who was second struggled early in the round however finished strong both carding one-under 35’s.
In the Junior/Senior Boys Division, point race leader Reggie Crews of Jacksonville was tied at 74 with Jake Stone of Holly Springs at the conclusion of round one. Closely following was Winternational veteran Greg Mauldin of Archdale with a 75, ahead of Micah Alexander of Durham and Zachary Martin of Pinehurst by just two shots. These five battled for position throughout round two, but it was Stone’s steady play on Pinehurst No. 1 that propelled him ahead of the pack to capture the division title (74-71—145), low round and tighten the overall point race. Crews, a junior at Jacksonville High School, finished tied for second (74-73—147), with Martin (77-70—147). Greg Mauldin rounded out the top four with rounds of (75-74—149).
The Girls Division has seen different players at the top of the leader board each event, and Event #4 was no different. Lacy Mirovich of Mt. Pleasant, NC, led after round one, but Madison Moore of Westfield, an eighth grader at East Surry High School pulled out the win at the end of round two. While Moore stated she wasn’t pleased with her scores, she was pleased with the experience of playing Pinehurst and her round two over round one twenty-three-shot improvement, which gave her the Girl’s Division title (108-85—193). Mirovich, a sophomore at Mt. Pleasant High School, also improved between the two rounds, finishing one with 103-99—202 to capture second place.
Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst Event #5 is scheduled January 14-15, 2012. Play will be contested on Ellis Maples’ designed Pinehurst No. 5.
