Cold Weather Greets Winternational Contestants in Event #3

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC

On a sunny weekend where temperatures did not reach the fifty degree mark with wind gusts of up to 22 miles-per-hour, the Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst crowned two, first-time champions at the Golf Club at Pinehurst No. 6.  The Tom Fazio re-designed venue played over 6500 yards Saturday and Sunday for both boys divisions.

In the Junior-Senior Division, Brandon Matthews of Dupont, Penn. played near flawless golf through thirty-one holes in claiming his first Winternational title.  Matthews fired two-over-par in the first round and followed it with even par until the last five holes of round two.  A senior at Pittston Area High School, Matthews was four shots ahead of the competition on Saturday, and kept that momentum through the remainder of the event to capture the title with 73-76—149.

In a three-way tie after round one were Micah Alexander of Durham, Edmond Brooks IV of Sanford, and Alex Riddle of Fayetteville. Alexander, a junior at Alexander Christian School, who has been in contention for the first place position in both Event #1 and Event #2, made a valiant effort, tying Matthews’ round two score, but it was not enough to overcome Matthews’ lead.  Alexander’s 77-76—153 placed him firmly in second, followed by Mitchell Ellis of Greensboro (78-79—157) in third and Nick Dorton of Anderson, SC in fourth (79-79—158).

Eric Edwards was also four shots ahead of the competition in the Freshman-Sophomore Division at the end of round one.  Though Edwards struggled somewhat on the front nine Saturday, his 75-75—150 garnered him his first Winternational Championship of the 2011-2012 series.  Improving his game by five strokes over round one, Court Settle of Raleigh took second with 84-79—163, followed one shot behind in third by Bishop Saunders of Pittsboro (85-79—164).  Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School freshman Jonathon Davis of Advance, NC finished fourth, improving his round one score by an impressive fourteen shots (90-76—166).

Winternational Junior Series Event #4 is scheduled on two of Donald Ross’ masterpieces; the newly restored Pinehurst No. 2 on December 17, and Pinehurst No.1 on December 18.
