VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC

On a sun-filled, unseasonably mild Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Winternational Junior Series held its second event of the 2011-2012 season.  The venue was Tom Fazio’s Pinehurst No. 4, which measured 6658 yards for these high school students and played to a par of 36-36--72 for the two rounds of stroke play.

In the Junior-Senior Division, Reggie Crews of Jacksonville, N.C. came from one shot off the first round pace to defeat Micah Alexander of Durham, NC and Brigham Stewart, of Cedar Rapids, IA , who tied for runner-up honors, one shot in arrears.  Though there was only one stroke separating Crews, a junior at Jacksonville High School, and Mitchell Ellis of Greensboro following round one, Ellis fell out of contention in round two finishing 71-81—152, dropping him to the division’s fourth place position. Crews’ stellar start, which included four front-nine birdies, jump started his weekend with a four under par 32 on his opening nine in round one.

In the Freshman-Sophomore Division, Winternational veteran David Kocher, a sophomore at Charlotte Christian School, recorded the division’s low round on Saturday with his 76, and maintained his lead in round two to record the division’s low round and take the title 76-78—154.  Finishing just one shot behind Kocher was Event #1’s Freshman-Sophomore winner, Alex Smalley, a sophomore at Wake Forest-Rolesville High.  Winston-Salem resident Gray Townsend finished third, two strokes ahead of fourth place O’Neal School freshman James Sugg, of Pinehurst.

Mary Barbero’s, of Fairfax Station, VA consistent play through both rounds kept her in the Girl’s Division lead, finishing ahead of second place Hailey Crider of Pinehurst. Barbero, a senior at South Country Secondary School, will attend Winthrop College in the fall of 2012. Her play on the four par three holes each day consisted of two birdies and six pars, which spelled the difference for her victory.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its third event December 10-11, at the The Golf Club at Pinehurst No. 6.  Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (847)204-9888 for further information.
