Winternational Junior Series Begins 18th Consecutive Year at Pinehurst Resort

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC

The Winternational Junior Series, which consists of eight championship events for high school age boys and girls, played its first event of the 2011-2012 Season this weekend at the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC.  This series, the oldest of its kind in the Country, has had over 2000 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993.  This year nearly 100 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the events on six of the eight Pinehurst Resort courses, including two events on designer Donald Ross’ famous Pinehurst No. 2.

As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions; one for Juniors and Seniors and the other for Freshmen and Sophomores. Following round 1, Alex Smalley, from Wake Forest, was leading the Freshman-Sophomore Division, three shots ahead of Holly Springs’ Timothy Conover. Only three shots separated the next six players in the Freshman-Sophomore Division after the first day of play on Centennial Pinehurst No. 8.  Smalley, in his second season as a Winternational Junior Series participant, and a freshman at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, went on to win the Freshman-Sophomore Division title 75-77—152, increasing his lead to five shots in round 2, due in no small part to four birdies in the second round. Conover, a sophomore at Holly Springs High School, remained in second place finishing 78-79—157, one shot ahead of third place Court Settle of Raleigh (79-79—158).  Ethan Mead of Charlotte finished fourth.

It was a close race in the Junior-Senior Division, as well.  After round 1, Reggie Crews of Jacksonville was one shot ahead of a three-way tie for second between Mitchell Ellis of Greensboro, Trey Guy of Fayetteville, and Edmond Brooks IV of Sanford.  But it was Guy, a junior at Terry Sanford High School, who battled stiff winds in round 2 to garner the Junior-Senior Division win 76-76—152.   Crews followed one shot behind Guy (75-78—153) to take second.  Greg Mauldin from Archdale, a junior at Westchester Country Day School finished third, and Edmond Brooks IV of Sanford finished fourth.

In the Girl’s Division, Gabrielle Weiss of Pinehurst took home the Girl’s Division Champion trophy.  Weiss, a sophomore at Pinecrest High School, who relocated to the area from Macungie, PA only two weeks ago, shot a solid 83-78—161.  Though the seventeenth hole proved to be a challenge both days, Weiss used the first hole as an equalizer, scoring a birdie there in round 1 and an eagle in round 2. In second place, from Greenwich, CT, was Camilla Vik, scoring 87-87—174.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event November 26-27, on another of Tom Fazio’s design gems, Pinehurst No. 4.  Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 to register or for further information.
