Winternational Junior Series Begins 17th Consecutive year at Pinehurst Resort: Charlotte Teens Dominate with Divisional Wins
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
November 14, 2010
The Winternational Junior Series, which consists of nine championship events for high school age boys and girls, got under way this weekend at the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC. This series, the oldest of its kind in the country, has had over 2000 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993. This year nearly 100 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the events. The final event of the Series will be contested in March on designer Donald Ross’ famous Pinehurst Course, No. 2.
As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions, one for Juniors and Seniors and the other for Freshmen and Sophomores. Christian Cichan from Charlotte, N.C. won the Freshman/ Sophomore Division Championship, played Saturday and Sunday on Pinehurst No. 5. Cichan, a sophomore at Providence Day School, led both days with a 69-67=136, finishing eights shots in the lead. Six birdies in round one and five in round two, in addition to a round two eagle, secured the low round award for Cichan, as well.
Seven total birdies over the 36-hole event led Danny Guise of Greenwich, Conn. (74-70=144), to a tie with Andy Simmons of Charlotte, N.C. (72-72=144). A sophomore at Greenwich High School, Guise stayed on shot ahead of Simmons, a sophomore at Meyers Park, on both the front and the back nine in round two. Fourth place went to Ben Dietrich of Conover, N.C. (75-73=148), and Josh Stockwell of Aberdeen, N.C. (76-77=153) garnered fifth place.
In the Junior/Senior Division, there was a three-way tie at 74 in the club house after round one. While David Sargent of Davidson, N.C., Al Dickens of Charlotte, N.C. and, Kyle Morris of Deer Park, N.Y played in the final group of the final round, only Dickens (74-69=143) vaulted to a playoff for the title with Mitch Robinette of Charlotte, N.C., by sinking a fifteen-foot putt on the final hole. Dickens took the playoff with a regulation par four to Robinette’s five for the win. Robinette shot the low round of the division with a four under 68 on Sunday.
Only one shot separated the next three junior with David Sargent of Davidson, N.C. finishing third (74-76=150), Colin McKenna of Summerfield, N.C. finishing fourth (77-74=151) and Mitch Schneider (81-71=152) of Charlotte, N.C. finishing fifth.
The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event November 25-26, on the Pinehurst Resort’s famed No. 8 Course, designed by Tom Fazio.
