2010-2011 Players of the Year and All Americans
WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES AT PINEHURST
2010-2011 PLAYER OF THE YEAR HONORS AND ALL-AMERICAN TEAM MEMBERS
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA
March 20, 2011
The seventeenth annual Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst concluded its season this weekend on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 and Ellis Maples-designed Pinehurst No. 5. Over one hundred high school boys were members during the 2010-2011 Season. The Winternationals, a nine tournament series, has been based in Pinehurst since its inception and conducts championships on all of the Pinehurst Championship layouts. Competition was held in two separate divisions, Junior/Senior and Freshman/Sophomore.
In the Junior/Senior Division, Mitch Robinette of Charlotte, N.C. claimed Player of the Year honors with the highest point total in the division. Robinette, presently a senior at Grace Academy in Charlotte, was in a tight race with Jeffrey Jackman of Summerfield, N.C. throughout the season, but garnered Player of the Year honors with his one championship and three runner-up finishes. Jackman finished a close second with his one title and two second place finishes.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill, N.C. capped off the season with a win in the final event, his fourth win of the season, and claimed divisional Player of the Year honors. Griffin, who played six Winternational events, defeated Gregory Mauldin of Archdale, N.C., who also played six events, and captured the runner up position. Other All Americans in the Freshman/Sophomore division were Hickory residents Austin Harrill and his brother Peter Harrill, and Nick Dorton of Anderson, S.C . A seventh grader at Northview Middle School, Austin Harrill is one of the youngest All American divisional players in the history of this seventeen-year series.
Chris Noonan received the fifth annual Bud Shulby Memorial Sportsmanship Award. The late Bud Shulby, former ten-year rules official for the Winternational Junior Series and husband to current seventeen-year rules official Ellen Shulby, displayed morals and ethics intertwined in the game of golf. A senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Durham, N.C., Noonan’s honesty, attitude, and demeanor during the competition this season demonstrated the qualities represented by the award.
The Series also named its Seventeenth Winternational Junior Series All-American team. Ten high school boys were awarded All-American status because of their tournament results for the nine events. The point system is based on the four highest point totals for each individual across the nine-event series. The Winternational All-Americans, their hometown, and year of school are:
