Event #8 Tightens Points Race

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
February 21, 2010

After having to adjust Event #5, postpone Event #6 and cancel Event #7 altogether due to this season’s bitter weather, the Winternational Junior Series Event #8 played under sunshine and milder temperatures Saturday and Sunday. The cooperative weather and the Pinehurst No. 6 course created an ideal setting for participants to hone their game, making competition stiff.

Though Austin Dunlap of Pinehurst went to the clubhouse Saturday one shot ahead of Clay Holland of Burlington, NC in the Junior-Senior Division, it was Holland who garnered the win by conclusion of play on Sunday with a 75-74=149. Dunlap and Holland were neck-in-neck through the fourth hole, when Holland, who recently signed a letter of intent with Elon University, pulled ahead and remained one over on the last 13 holes to clinch victory. A tie for second between Justin Roberto of Concord and Charles Valuzzo of Mt. Pleasant, SC, left each five strokes behind Holland with a two-day score of 154.  Fourth place, one shot back of second, went to Dunlap, and fifth to Matthew Conley (79-77=156) of Raleigh.

The Girls Division pitted Summer Barmore and Elizabeth Hall, each of Pinehurst against each other again.  Both girls have won twice this Winternational season, and were tied in the points race.  While Hall’s score on Saturday was six shots back from Barmore, she made up the deficit Sunday to pull ahead of Barmore by one shot, taking first place with a two-day total of 177.  This puts Hall ahead in the point’s race.

In the Freshman-Sophomore Division both Christian Cichan of Charlotte and Joshua Martin of Pinehurst shot 74-78 in regulation play, sending them to a play off. Cichan sunk an 18 foot putt on the sixth hole of sudden death to win, putting Martin in second for Event #8, but still in first in the point’s race. Sam Kosich of Pinehurst finished in third place (79-74=153), and Benjamin Dietrich of Conover (79-75=154) took fourth.
