Weather Again a Factor for Winternational Junior Series

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
January 17, 2010

Weather again played a big part in Event #5 of the 2009-2010 Winternational Junior Series. Pending a forecast of rain for Sunday’s round, participants played 27 holes on Saturday. The remaining nine holes began late due to wet course conditions, then ended in a sudden downpour. Despite tough conditions, two returning and one new Champions were crowned.

Austin Dunlap of Pinehurst won for the third time scoring 68-77=145. Dunlap, a junior at Pinecrest High School, carded the low round in the Junior-Senior Division with a four under par effort. He made four birdies and fourteen pars in the bogey-free first round. Five shots behind Dunlap was runner-up Kane Wilkerson of Winston-Salem. Wilkerson carded a 75-75=150, followed closely by Alex Ehlert of Raleigh, with a 74-78=152.

The Girls Division also had a returning Champion. Summer Barmore of Pinehurst claimed her second victory, finishing six shots ahead of second place Elizabeth Hall, also of Pinehurst.

Weston Bell, a sophomore from Piedmont, SC, came from five shots back after Saturday’s first round to capture the Freshman-Sophomore Division Championship. Minchung Kim of Cary, NC and Joshua Martin, a two-time divisional winner from Pinehurst shared the first-round lead with one over par 73’s; but Bell, on the strength of six birdies in the final round, shot 70 for his 148 winning total, one better than runner-up Martin. In third place was Michael Hocker of Chapel Hill, NC, carding a 75-76=151 and in fourth place was overnight leader Kim. Tied for fifth place was Jake Stone of Holly Springs, NC and Benjamin Dietrich, of Conover, NC.
