Barton, Maudlin, and Kochevar tame legendary Pinehurst #2 in Event #3
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
December 6, 2009
The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst held its third event of the 2009-2010 season this weekend on the two premier courses at the famed Pinehurst Resort. Wet and blustery weather greeted contestants on Saturday as 45 high school age boys and girls tackled the famed Pinehurst No. 2 for round one. Sunday started out with a frost delay before the teens began play on Pinehurst No. 4, which was designed and rerouted in 1999 by Tom Fazio). As temperatures climbed higher, scores went lower in a race for the championship in each division.
In the Girls Division, Brooke Kochevar of Glen Ellyn, IL was tied overnight with Summer Barmore of Pinehurst. Kochevar, a freshman, fired an 89 on the No. 2 course in the first round, then an 80 in round two for a 169. Barmore and Elizabeth Hall, also of Pinehurst, each shot a 97 in round two, putting Barmore in second place.
Gregory Mauldin, won the Freshman/Sophomore division with a 72-78=150. Mauldin, of Archdale, NC, shot even par on both the front and back of Pinehurst No. 2 in round one, then went on to relinquish his overnight shot lead to eventual runner-up Stanhope Johnson of Greensboro. Mauldin fell behind by three strokes after twelve holes but birdies on holes 14 and 18 sealed his single shot victory. Runner-up position was shared by Jackson Spires of Fayetteville with a 74-77=151.
Fourth place in the Freshman-Sophomore Division was captured by a former Winternational All-American from Henderson, NC, Ben O’Geary. There was a fifth place tie between Glen Ellyn, IL resident Kyle Kochevar and Sam Kosich of Pinehurst.
The Junior-Senior division went two extra holes in order to crown its champion. Michael Borton of Winston Salem, a junior from R.J. Reynolds High School was victorious in the two-hole playoff with two regulation pars over Sam Packard of Pinehurst. Both players shot 148 totals for the 36-hole regulation play. Borton is a high school teammate of last week’s champion, Kane Wilkerson; Packard, a senior at Pinecrest High School, recently signed a letter of intent at East Carolina The playoff was necessary when Borton birdied the final hole of regulation to make up two shots on Packard.
In third place, and two shots out of the playoff, was Jack Keefe, of Fayetteville. Tied for fourth with 153 totals were Charles Valluzzo of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Alex Wise of Greensboro, NC.
The Winternational Junior Series will hold its fourth event December 18 through 20. Play will be contested on the Tom and George Fazio designed Pinehurst No. 6.
