Winternationals Second Event showcases North Carolina Talent

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
November 29, 2009

The Winternational Junior Series held its second event of its sixteenth season this weekend at the world renowned Pinehurst Resort.  Seasonal winds but mild weather greeted contestants as 51 teenage boys and girls tackled the Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 course, a Tom Fazio design, Saturday and Sunday.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division it was Joshua Martin of Pinehurst, who took the Division trophy for the second consecutive time, having led both rounds with a 74-73=147. Running a close second was Jonathan DiIanni, of Kernesrville, NC, with a 75-74=149. Martin’s seven birdies over the 36-holes spelled the difference between the winner and runner up positions.  DiIanni, playing with Martin in the final round eagled the par five 17th hole to pull within one, but then watched as Martin answered with a birdie on the same hole and they both parred the final. Martin is a seventh grade student at West Pine Middle School and is competing in the Freshman-Sophomore Division.

In third place, from Norwood, NC, was Erik Benson and in fourth with an 82-76=158 was Will Rainey of Charlotte.

In the Junior/Senior Division, only three shots separated the top eight players in the clubhouse overnight; Kane Wilkerson of Winston-Salem and Richard Fountain of Raleigh finished the 36-hole regulation tournament in a tie with identical 149 totals.  Wilkerson, a senior from R.J. Reynolds High School was victorious in a sudden death playoff. Wilkerson was two under par for his first sixteen holes in the final round but stumbled at the finish as Fountain played his final eight holes in even par.  Tied for third place with 150 totals were Austin Dunlap of Pinehurst and Zachery Munroe of Charlotte. Fifth place was captured by Bryan Steward, also of Pinehurst.

Southern Pines resident Elizabeth Hall was again victorious in the second event of the series.  Hall, who trailed overnight leader Katherine Connell of Midlothian, VA, by eleven  shots, made up four shots on her front nine and seven shots on the back nine to tie Connell and was declared victorious when Connell failed to answer the call for the sudden death playoff.  Hall scored a division 85 in Sunday’s final round. In third place from Pinehurst was Summer Barmore with a 98-91=189 total.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its third event December 5-6, on two of the Resort’s eight courses.  Play will be contested on the Donald Ross Masterpiece and Major Championship venue, Pinehurst No. 2, as well as Tom Fazios’s Pinehurst No. 4.  Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
