Local Teens Dominate Inaugural Winternational Junior Series Event.
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
November 8, 2009
The Winternational Junior Series, which consists of nine championships for high school age boys and girls, got under way this weekend at the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC. This series, one of the oldest of its kind in the country, has had over 1600 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993. This year, over 120 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the championships. The final round of the final tourney will be contested in March on designer Donald Ross’ original Pinehurst Course, No. 1.
As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions, one being for Juniors and Seniors and the other for Freshmen and Sophomores. Joshua Martin from Pinehurst, won the inaugural Freshman/Sophomore Division Championship by eight shots. Martin, who is a seventh grader at West Pine, led both days with a 68-68=72. Four birdies in round one and two in round two in addition to a round two eagle secured the low round award for Martin, as well. A freshman at Alpha-Omega Academy from Conover, Ben Dietrich, was runner up with a 72-72=144 in scorecard playoff, with third place going to Erik Benson, from Norwood, NC with a 70-74=144. Fourth place winner, Davis Bateman from Charlotte, NC shot a 75-71=146, and Chapel Hill, NC resident, Michael Hocker II shot a 77-74=151 to take fifth place.
In the Junior/Senior Division, Winternational veteran Austin Dunlap, from Pinehurst, was victorious. Dunlap, a senior at Pinecrest High School who posted a one over par total of 141 on rounds of 69-72, won his division by one shot. Running a close second with a 73-69=142 was Andrew Fowler of Cary, NC in a score card playoff ahead of Alex Wise of Greensboro, NC who shot a 70-72=142. Burlington, NC resident Clay Holland took fourth place (71-74=145) and Sam Packard of Pinehurst took fifth with a 75-71=146.
The Girl’s Division saw two local residents take the prize. Elizabeth Hall’s 77 on Pinehurst No. 1 in Saturday’s first round gave her a seven-shot overnight lead over runner-up Hailey Crider of Pinehurst. Sunday’s results found no change on the leader board as Hall, of Southern Pines, shot 77 again for a 154 victory over Crider’s 84-89=173. Hall’s victory was highlighted with an eagle two on the tenth hole when she holed out from 197 yards.
The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event November 28-29, on the Pinehurst Resort’s famed No. 8 Course. Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
