The sixteenth annual Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst concluded its season today at the renowned Tom Fazio designed, Centennial Pinehurst No.8. Over one hundred and fifty-five high school boys and girls were members during the 2009-2010 season. The Winternationals, an eight tournament series, has been based in Pinehurst since its inception and conducts championships on all of the Pinehurst Championship layouts. Competition is held in three separate divisions, Junior/Senior Boys, Freshman/Sophomore Boys, and Girls.
In the Junior/Senior Division, Austin Dunlap, of Pinehurst NC, claimed Player of the Year honors with four event wins. Dunlap, presently a junior at Pinecrest High School in Pinehurst, dominated the season. Kane Wilkerson, a senior from Winston-Salem, NC, finished in the runner-up position in the points race on the strength of a win, a second, and a third.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Joshua Martin capped off the season with a win in the final event and divisional Player of the Year honors. Martin, who played five of the eight Winternational events, won three times to defeat Benjamin Dietrich of Conover, NC. Martin, a seventh grader at West Pine Middle School, is the youngest divisional player of the year in the history of this sixteen year series.
Two young ladies from Pinehurst, NC, shared the Player of the Year honors in the ladies division. Summer Barmore and Elizabeth Hall, both students at the O’Neal School, played in every event and each was victorious in three of the eight events.
Marshall W. Ritchie Jr. received the fourth annual Bud Shulby Memorial Sportsmanship Award. The late Bud Shulby, former ten-year rules official for the Winternational Junior Series and husband to current sixteen year rules official, Ellen Shulby, displayed morals and ethics intertwined in the game of golf. Ritchie’s attitude and demeanor during competition this season demonstrated the qualities exemplified by this award.
The Series also named its Sixteenth Annual Winternational Junior Series All-American team. Twelve high school boys and girls were awarded All-American status because of their tournament results for the eight events. The point system is based on the four highest point totals for each individual across the 8 event series. The Winternational All-Americans, their hometown and year of school are listed below:
