FIFTEEN CONSECUTIVE YEARS AT PINEHURST RESORT FOR WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

The Winternational Junior Series held its seventh and final event of its fifteenth season this past weekend at Pinehurst Resort.  Sixty-three members convened to challenge two of Pinehurst’s eight courses. The first round took place Saturday     on the recently renovated No.1 and proved to be a fair test for all. Sunday, met by blustery winter conditions, became a challenging second round on the world famous Pinehurst No. 2, home to two United States Open Championships and most recently the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Beau Cutts of Henderson, NC defeated Durham native Stratten Waldt, in Cutts’ second playoff victory. Waldt was tied for the lead with Stuart McGoogan of Charlotte, NC after Saturday’s first round; both players posting even par 70. Waldt followed up his stellar round one play with a four-over par 76 to finish at 146 for the event. Two shots back after round one, Beau Cutts, a two-time Winternational All American and high school junior from Henderson, NC, shot 74 to also finish at 146.  The playoff started on the 18th hole of Pinehurst No.2 and ended quickly when  Cutts’ made par for the win.    In third place from Southern Pines, NC was Michael McGowan, 2009 Player of the Year for his age division, with a 72-87—149 total.  Fourth place was captured by Alex Wise of Eden, NC, and Sam Packard of Pinehurst, NC finished fifth.

Capturing his first victory I in the Freshman/Sophomore Division was another Henderson resident, freshman Ben O’Geary. O’Geary posted a 71-79—150 to beat out runner-up Robert Boyce of Raleigh, by one stroke. Trevor Cone of Concord, NC, whose 75-77—152 event total included a fine even par back-nine in Sunday’s final round, garnered third place. Fourth place was won by David Kostyal of Wilmington, 2009 Player of the Year for his age division, with a 74-80—154, which was one-shot better than solo fifth place finisher, Jonathan DiIanni, from Kernersville, NC.

The Girls’ Division saw Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC break Sarah Almond’s six-event winning streak.  Kirk led Saturday by one stroke, finishing with a 74 followed it up Sunday with a 77 and a two-day total of 151.  Almond, a Junior at Albemarle’s Gray Stone Day School, shot an even par on her first nine Sunday before the wind got the better of her closing with a 77 and an event total 152.  Keri Muse of Sterling, Virginia finished third.

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will return for its sixteenth season in November.  For membership information, future scheduling and results from the 2008-2009 season, please refer to the Winternational website at www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com, or contact Peter DeYoung, series chairman and founder, at (910) 295-5661.
