COLD WEATHER GREETS WINTERNATIONAL CONTESTANTS IN EVENT #6

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

On a weekend, which saw temperatures starting at the fifty degree mark on Saturday and diving to below freezing windchill for all of Sunday, the Winternational Junior Series was able to finish only twenty-seven of a thirty-six hole championship. The venue was the Tom Fazio re-designed Pinehurst No.6 which played over 6500 yards for both boys divisions and just over 5000 in the girls division.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Quent Mather, from Charlotte, NC, played near flawless golf in claiming his first Winternational title.  Quent, fired an even-par round of 71 in the first round and followed it with a one-over par, 36, in Sunday’s nine hole finale.  Mather, claimed event number five’s low round award three weeks ago but was unable to nail down the victory; however, his six birdies in the this event catapulted him to a four-shot win.  Tied for runner-up honors were Bradford Griffith, of Morrisville, NC, and a former divisional All-American from Pinehurst, NC, Sam Packard.  Packard and Griffith shot identical rounds of 76-35=111.  Another shot back in fourth place was Mark A. Wright, of Tabor City, NC.  In fifth place was Paul Howell of Wilson, NC.

In the girls division, Sarah Almond, Albemarle, NC, continued her domination claiming victory for the sixth consecutive weekend.  Sarah, followed up her first round 78 with a two-over par 38 for Sunday’s shortened round.  Runner-up, with an 81-42=123 total was Taelor Rubin, of Raleigh, NC.

David Kostyal II, of Wilmington, NC, won his second Winternational Championship of this series with a resounding five-shot margin.  Kostyal, followed his opening seventy-three with a superb even-par thirty-six in Sunday’s freezing temperatures.  The sophomore forged to a four-shot lead on Saturday and was never threatened in the final round.  In the runner-up position was Tyler Hashimoto, of Marvin, NC, with a 77-37=114 total.  In third place was Pinehurst’s own, Sam Kosich and tied for fourth was were the threesome of Andrew Fowler, of Cary, NC, Jordan Knowles, of Fayetteville, NC, and Stanhope Johnson Jr., of Greensboro, NC.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its final event on Pinehurst No.1 & 2 on February 21 and 22. At the conclusion of that event the Winternationals will name their divisional Players of the Year and the 15th  All American Team.
