CUTTS, DiIANNI, AND ALMOND WIN AT WINTERNATIONAL EVENT #5
VILLAGE of PINEHURST, NC
The 5th event of the 15h annual Winternational Junior Tournament Series concluded Sunday following two days of competition on the Centennial Pinehurst No. 8. The weekend was marked with temperatures in the high fifties and Saturday’s first round windy conditions calmed for Sunday’s second and final round. Forty-four of the 180 member’s competed in this tournament.
Sarah Almond, from Albemarle, NC, continued her domination in the girls division this year shooting 74-70 for an even par 144. The Gray Stone Day School junior highlighted her final round with a tap-in eagle 3 on the 17th hole. Almond is on pace to set the all-time Winternational season scoring mark.
In the Junior/Senior Boys Division, Two familiar names tied atop the leaderboard. It took one extra hole for Beau Cutts, of Henderson, NC, to defeat three-time champion Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC. Cutts, last year’s player of the year in the Freshman/Sophomore division, got it up and down on the first playoff hole for birdie to defeat McGowan and to claim his first title in this series. Both players came from back in the pack to eclipse Quent Mather, of Charlotte, NC, after he posted a phenomenal 33-36=69 in the blustery first round. Mather counted eight threes on his first round card, Mather a senior finished tied for third with the Raleigh North Carolinian resident Spencer Lawson. In fifth place from Kernersville, NC, was Will DiIanni 75-77=152.
In the Freshman/Sophomore division, Jonathan DiIanni, a freshman from Westchester Country Day School in Kernersville, NC, shot back to back seventy-fives for a comfortable three shot win. DiIanni, rallied on the last nine of the tournament to shoot even-par, 36, in defeating co-runners up Spencer Harris, of Fayetteville, NC, and Tyler Hashimoto, from Marvin, NC. In fourth place was Ben O’Geary, a freshman from Henderson, NC and in fifth was Wilson Day from Raleigh, NC.
