McGOWAN WINS AGAIN AT WINTERNATIONALS; ALMOND AND PIZETOSKI ALSO DIVSIONAL WINNERS

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC

The fourth event of the Fifteenth Annual Winternational Junior Tournament Series concluded Sunday following two days of competition on Pinehurst Nos. 2 and 5.  Saturday’s round was played under cloudy skies and mild temperatures, but Sunday dawned rainy with temperatures dropping through the course of play. Sixty-five of the 172 members competed in this tournament.  The famed Pinehurst No. 2, venue of the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open and 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship, was utilized in the opening round on Saturday.

In the Junior/Senior Boys Division, Winternational veteran Michael McGowan, shot 73-70 for 143 and a 3 shot win. McGowan from near by Southern Pines, NC, and recently named player of the year by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association, had a 36 on the both nine’s of Saturday’s first round, and 35 on front and back Sunday to solidify his lead. McGowans five shot victory was highlighted by his eight birdies over the thirty-six holes. Low round honors on Sunday went to Will Farrell of Summerfield, NC who shot a sterling three under par 69.

Following closely behind McGowan was former player of the year and first team all American, Beau Cutts with a 73-74, 147.  In third place from Raleigh, NC, was Winternational newcomer Spencer Lawson with a 72-76, 148 total.  His 72 on Pinehurst Course No. 2 in the first round tied McGowan for the overnight lead. In fourth place from Huntersville, NC was David hall with a 74-77, 151.

In the girls division Sarah Almond from Albermarle, NC, continued her domination of the series with her fourth consecutive win.  This week, however, was closely contested as Katie Kirk, of  Davidson, NC came from three shots back after the first round to shoot a two under par 69 in Sunday’s finale. Almond, however, was up to the challenge as she answered with a one under par 70 on Sunday for a two shot victory. In third place in the girls division with a 76-81-157 total was the Chesapeake City, MD resident, Christian Vosters.

In the Freshman/Sophomore division Danny Pizetoski, also of Davidson, NC dominated both rounds with scores of 71-71, 142.  This even par total was good for an eight shot win over Charlie Killian of Raleigh, NC. Pizetoski made six birdies in his two rounds over Pinehurst Nos. 2 and 5.  Tied for in the division were Will Dull, of Winston-Salem, NC, Charles Valluzzo of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Tyler Hashimota of Marvin, NC.  Dull, a sophomore, improved his score fifteen shots from Saturday to his one under 71 on Sunday.
