WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES EVENT #2 FIGHTS HOLIDAY WEATHER

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

November 30, 2008

The Winternational Junior Series of Golf which consists of seven championships for high school age boys and girls, endured through brutal weather conditions this weekend at Pinehurst No.8.  This series, one of the oldest of its kind in the country, has had more than 2000 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993.  The final round of the final tourney will be contested in February on the famed Donald Ross masterpiece Pinehurst No. 2.

As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions: Juniors and Seniors compete against one another, as do Freshmen and Sophomores.  David Kostyal II, a Sophomore out of Wilmington, NC took the younger division with a 40-35—75 in ever-worsening cold and wet conditions.   Clearly unaffected by below-freezing wind-chill late in the day, he made birdies on holes 16 and 17 to edge out Andrew Fowler, Spencer Harris, Grant Houser, and Tripp Watkins who all turned in 76.  David, who tied for second in the first event, now has an early lead of the division points-race.

In the Junior/Senior Division, three-time Winternational All American, Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, NC, was victorious…again.  After winning this Series’ first event McGowan, a Senior, put up an unbelievable number in the freezing rain; he three-putted the last two greens to finish par, bogey for a smooth four under par round of 33-35--68. Look forward to seeing Michael under par and atop college scoreboards as he has committed to attend the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on scholarship with the Men’s golf team.  Michael is a past U.S. Amateur and Junior Amateur match play competitor, and NC high school state champion.  Sam Packard, a Pinehurst local, finished second shooting a one under par back nine to finish at one over par 73.  James Bramlett from Charlotte, NC put up a one under 35 on the front nine and managed to hold it together through the elements for a final 74.  Paul Howell of Wilson, NC and Alex Wise of Eden, NC tied for fourth with hard-fought scores of 75.

Event 1 winner Sarah Almond showed again that she knows her way around a golf course.  She was the second to tee off – the temperature was 43.  An early highlight was a tap-in eagle on the second hole, a 425 yard par 5.  She went on to have three birdies and came in with 35-38—73.  Sarah is from Albermarle, NC and currently a student at Grey Stone Day School.  Tied for second were Series rookie Hannah Pierce of King George, VA, and Christina Vosters from Chesapeake City, MD, both finishing with 81.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its third event on December 6th-7th on Pinehurst No.4 and Pinehurst No.1.  Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for  membership or competition information.
