WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES BEGINS FIFTEENTH CONECUTIVE YEAR AT PIENHURST RESORT IN NORTH CAROLINA

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

The Winternational Junior Series of Golf which consists of seven championships for high school age boys and girls, got under way this weekend at the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC.  This series, one of the oldest of its kind in the country, has had over 2000 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993.  This year, over 160 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the championships.  The final round of the final tourney will be contested in February on the famed Donald Ross masterpiece Pinehurst No. 2.

As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions, one being for Juniors and Seniors and the other for Freshmen and Sophomores.  A Freshman from Marvin, NC, Tyler Hoshimoto, with 75-74=149, won the inaugural Freshman/Sophomore Division Championship by three shots.  Tyler, a sophomore from Weddington High School, was victorious over three runners-up, Trey Guy, David Kostyal II, and Charles Valluzzo. Hoshimoto trailed Trip Watkins, of Henderson, NC, by one shot after the first round on Pinehurst No.5.  The Champions’ two-over 74 included three birdies for his margin of victory.  In fifth place with a 83-72=155 (72 was low round of tournament for division) was Andrew Fowler of Cary, NC.

In the Junior/Senior Division, three-time Winternational All American, Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, NC, was victorious.  McGowan, a Senior, posted two under-par rounds of 71-70 for a three under-par total of 141 and a four shot win. The O’Neal School standout will attend University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and join the Men’s golf team in the fall of 2009.  Michael is a past U.S.Amateur and Junior Amateur match play competitor and state high school champion.  His play was highlighted by one eagle and five birdies for the two rounds.  In second place was Noah Ratner, of Asheville, NC, with a 73-72=145.  Former Winternational All American, Beau Cutts, of Henderson, NC, captured third place on the strength of a one on the 180 yard, par 3, 15th during round one.  Lucas Armstrong, of Church Hill, TN, was the fourth place winner with rounds of 78-70-148.  In fifth place was Ryan Yarbrough, of Wilson, NC with a two round total of 77-72=149.

The Girl’s Division saw a junior from Albermarle, NC, Sarah Almond win her first WInternational title in her initial attempt.  Her three over-par 71-74=145 total included 5 birdies and outdistanced the field.  Sarah is a student at Grey Stone Day School.  Runner-up was former Winternational All American and co-player of the year Brianna Clemmons, of Oak Ridge, NC.  In third place was Kathryn Rand, of Hampstead, NC, with a 91-85=176.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event on November 29 through 30 on the Pinehurst Resort’s Centennial No. 8.  Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
