WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES CONCLUDES FOURTEENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR AT PINEHURST RESORT
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA
The Winternational Junior Series held its seventh and final event of its fourteenth season this past weekend at the famed Pinehurst Resort. Nearly 70 members convened to challenge two of Donald Ross’ earliest designs. Saturday’s first round was held on the short but daunting No. 3 course and Sunday’s final round was held on the world famous No. 2 course, home to two United States Open Championships. The players were greeted with relatively mild February conditions with temperatures approaching 60 degrees all weekend.
In the Junior/Senior Division, Apex, NC native John Conners, won his second event of the seven tournament series. The 6’5” 220 pound high school junior shot 72-74—146 for a 1-shot victory over runner-up Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC. Conners 72 in Saturday’s first round gave him a 1-shot lead over Jonathan McCurry of Sanford, NC. The eventual champion withstood a late charge by runner-up McGowan who played his last 12 holes in 2-under par. In third place with a sterling 2-under par final round, which included four birdies, was Brandon Jobe of nearby Fayetteville. Fourth place was captured by Noah Ratner of Asheville, NC, and Troy Spencer of Archdale, NC and Hunter Howell of Raeford, NC tied for fifth.
The Freshman/Sophomore Division found a familiar name at the top of the leader board after two rounds. The sophomore from Henderson, NC, Beau Cutts, won his third title of the seven tournament series with a 74-79—153 total. Runner-up position was garnered by Trevor Cone of Concord, NC, whose 80-75—155 total included a fine even par back-nine in Sunday’s final round. Third place was won by Eddie McCrossen of Ambler, PA with a 75-82—157 which was 1-shot better than solo fourth place finisher Andrew Knox, of Cary, NC.
The Girls’ Division saw a huge turnaround after Saturday’s initial 18-holes. Brooke Kochevar, from Glen Ellyn, IL, trailed by 8-shots going in to Sunday’s finale on the famed No. 2 layout, but pulled even after 11-holes and went on to record a 3-shot victory. Kochevar shot 92-82—174 to defeat Brianna Clemmons, of Oak Ridge, NC, who registered an 84-93—177.
The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will return for its fifteenth season in November. For additional information, please contact Peter DeYoung, series chairman and founder, at (910) 295-5661.
