CUTTS WINS AGAIN AT WINTERNATIONALS; ASHWORTH AND ADAMS ALSO DIVISIONAL WINNERS

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

The 5th event of the 14th annual Winternational Junior Tournament Series concluded Sunday following two days of competition on Pinehurst No. 4 and 5.  Saturday’s round was played under cloudless skies and spring-like temperatures, but Sunday dawned cold and cloudy. Forty of the 180 member’s competeted in this tournament.  Pinehurst No.4, the 2008 U.S. Amateur venue, was utilized in the opening round on Saturday.
In the girls division Lori-Beth Adams, from Burlington North Carolina, was the fifth champion crowned in this division in five events. Adams shot 80-78 for her 158 total and defeated former champion Brianna Clemmons, of Oak Ridge North Carolina, by a comfortable nine shot margin.  In third place was another former champion Brooke Kochevar from Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

In the Junior/Senior Boys Division, Winternational newcomer, Harrison Ashworth shot identical 77’s for 154 and a three shot win. Ashworth, from near by Fuquay-Varina North Carolina, had a sterling one under par, 35, on the closing nine of Saturday’s first round on the strength of three birdies.  His pair of 77’s defeated runner-up Stratton Waldt, of Durham North Carolina.  Tied for third with matching 78-81’s, 159, were Zach Capps, from Easley South Carolina, and Josh Mulvehill, from Harrisburg, North Carolina.  Tied for fifth were Bryan Rainey, of Henderson North Carolina, and Wilson Hicks, of Laurinburg North Carolina.

The Freshman/Sophomore division saw all the drama of the championship as it took 37 holes to crown Beau Cutts as champion.  Cutts, a sophomore from Kerr Vance High School, has won back to back championships and put himself in position for a possible player of the year award at the conclusion of the series. His even par, 72, in Saturday’s first round put him four shots in front of James Bramlett, of Charlotte.  Bramlett, however, played his last eight holes in even par to make up the entire deficit and force a sudden death playoff.  Both players reached the first playoff hole in regulation but Cutts drained his 23 foot birdie putt while Bramlett lipped out his six foot attempt.  In third place, also from Charlotte, was Stuart McGoogen and in fourth, with the low round for Sunday, was Robert Boyce with a 72.
