WINTERNATIONALS COMPETITORS TAME PINEHURST # 6 IN SEASON'S FOURTH EVENT

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

The Winternational Junior Series held its fourth event this past weekend at the Pinehurst Resort.  The venue was the Resort’s No. 6 Course designed by George and Tom Fazio in 1977; It has been utilized as the site for the final PGA Tour Qualifying School and Tom Fazio came back to finish a redesign in 2003.  Approximately forty members competed in the 36-hole stroke play tourney which saw cool temperatures on Saturday and a warming trend with brief showers during Sunday’s final round.

John Conners, a junior from nearby Apex, NC, was victorious in the junior/senior division.  After trailing by three shots after the first round, the Apex High School student put together a workman like 1-over par 36-36—72 for his two shot victory over Conneaut, OH native Jeff Headman.  The long hitting Conners, who at 6 foot 5 inches tall and 225 pounds, counted six 3s on his card on Sunday.  In third place was Brad Shepherd, of Dublin OH, with a 36-hole total of 76-78—154.  Warren Paul Taylor of Newtown, PA was in fourth and Nicholas Ricci of Charlotte, NC finished fifth.

In the freshman/sophomore division Beau Cutts, of Henderson, NC continued his stellar season with his first victory.  Cutts, a sophomore who attends Kerr Vance Academy, had a runner-up and third place finish before his two-shot win on Sunday.  His 1-under par 34 on the final nine holes was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on holes #15 and #16.  Zack Munroe, who won the first Winternational title this season, was runner-up in the division with a 78-78—156 total.  In third place, from Fayetteville, NC, another two shots back, was Jack Keefe, and tied for fourth were Robert Boyce of Raleigh and Evan Danchenka, of Harrisburg, NC.

The girls division kept its streak alive by crowning its fourth champion in as many events this season.  Brianna Clemmons, a Winternational newcomer, from Oak Ridge, NC, put together identical 84s for a 7-shot win over Brooke Kochevar of Glen Ellyn, IL.  Kochevar overcame a tough opening round with 5-over par 77 in Sunday’s finale.
