THREE NEW CHAMPIONS CROWNED IN THE SECOND EVENT OF THE WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES AT PINEHURST

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

The Winternational Junior Series held its second event of its fourteenth season this weekend at the world renowned Pinehurst Resort.  Blustery and cold weather greeted contestants as 54 high school age boys and girls tackled two of the Resort’s eight courses.  Round one was held at the Centennial Pinehurst No. 8, a Tom Fazio design, and Sunday’s final round was held on the Ellis Maples’ classic, Pinehurst No. 5.  With temperatures rarely reaching 50, scoring was difficult and the conditions were challenging.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, it took 37-holes to determine the Champion.  Dylan Harris, of nearby Southern Pines, NC, and Ben Simpson, of Lexington, KY completed play tied at 154 strokes.  Harris, the overnight leader, struggled early in his final round and quickly lost his advantage after the second hole.  Simpson, the new leader, made the turn to the final nine holes with a one shot lead.  Simpson and Harris battled back and forth for the remaining nine holes but neither could best the other in regulation.  In the playoff Harris’ par 4 on the first hole proved enough to hold of Simpson who made bogey.  In the third position and only one shot out of first, was Beau Cutts, of Henderson, NC.  Rounding out the top-5 were Alex Pope, of Chapel Hill, NC and Jim Liu, of Smithtown, NY.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Series newcomer Jonathan McCurry, of Sanford, NC trumped the field with a fine two round total of 75-70--145.  The only player to shoot under par this weekend, McCurry’s final round was highlighted by four birdies, offset by only two bogies.  McCurry began his final round with four pars, but found himself trailing eventual runner-up Warren Paul Taylor.  Taylor, of Newtown, PA began his final round with two pars and two birdies to distance himself from the field and overcome overnight leader Jeff Headman, of Conneaut, OH, who struggled early.   Through 27-holes, McCurry and Taylor found themselves tied for the lead.  McCurry briefly succumbed to Taylor on the 30th hole but quickly rebounded to grab the lead with back-to-back birdies.  Taylor never looked back and finished 7-shots clear of Taylor.  In third position was Zach Edmondson, or Morrisville, NC.  In fourth was 2006-07 Winternational All-American Michael McGowan, of Southern Pines, NC and in fifth was Nicholas Ricci, of Charlotte, NC.

In the Girl’s Division, past Wintenational Junior Series Champion, Brooke Kochevar, of Glen Ellyn, IL, claimed victory.  Kochevar trailed after round one, but strung together a solid final round in difficult conditions to take the title.  In the runner-up position was Alexandra Battle, of Honeoye Falls, NY and in third place was Kate Larimore, of Greensburg, KY.
