WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES BEGINS FOURTEENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR AT PINEHURST RESORT IN NORTH CAROLINA
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA
The Winternational Junior Series of Golf which consists of seven championships for high school age boys and girls, got under way this weekend at the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC. This series, one of the oldest of its kind in the country, has had over 1400 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993. This year, over 160 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the championships. The final round of the final tourney will be contested in February on the famed Donald Ross masterpiece Pinehurst No. 2.
As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions, one being for Juniors and Seniors and the other for Freshmen and Sophomores. A Freshman from Charlotte, NC, Zack Munroe, won the inaugural Freshman/Sophomore Division Championship by two shots. Zack, a freshman from Providence High School, trailed runner-up Beau Cutts by two shots after 27 holes, but his seven par, two birdie final nine holes gave him the margin of victory. Cutts, a sophomore from Henderson, NC, and overnight co-leader, held onto the runner-up position. In third place, from Bogart, GA was Blake Soni with a 77-72-149 total. In fourth place, was Evan Danchenka, from Harrisburg, NC with a final tally of 76-76-152.
In the Junior/Senior Division, Winternational newcomer, Troy Spencer, from Archdale, NC was victorious. Spencer, a Senior, who posted a 1-over par total of 143 on rounds of 73-70, won his division by a comfortable four shots. The High Point Christian Academy golfer has been named All-State for the past three years, and Player of the Year in his conference twice. Troy is undecided where he will attend college next year. Spencer’s 1-under par 33 distanced himself from all in the field except runner-up Lee Maxwell, of Cookeville, TN, who shot 2-under par over the same distance. Maxwell shot the low round of the tournament with his final round 68 on Sunday despite a bogie, bogie finish. Tied for third were Will Nicholson, of Raleigh, NC and Colton Carter, of Lumber Bridge, NC with 149 totals. In fifth place was Sanford, NC resident Jonathan McCurry.
The Girl’s Division saw a sophomore from Chesapeake City, MD, Christina Vosters, win her first Winternational Title in her initial attempt. Her 79 on Pinehurst No. 5 in Saturday’s first round gave her a two-shot overnight lead over Katie Kirk, of Davidson, NC. Sunday’s Results found no change on the leader board as both girls scored 83s. Kirk, overcame the eventual champion on the front nine and took a two-shot lead to the final nine-holes, but was unable to hang on for the victory. In third place was Brooke Kochevar, of Glen Ellyn, IL, with a 170 total.
The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event on November 24 through 25 on the Pinehurst Resort’s famed No. 8 and No. 5 Courses. Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
