HOWELL COMES FROM BEHIND AND JOBE WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE TITLE
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA
Gusty and cold weather greeted members of the Winternational Junior Series this weekend as the series contested its sixth event of its thirteenth season on the Ellis Maples designed Pinehurst No. 5 Course. Saturday’s first round of play was wrought with wind and temperatures in the low 40s as series members attempted to negotiate the hazard laden No. 5 Course. Sunday’s final round conditions were more conducive to scoring but still presented difficulties with the occasional strong breeze and temperatures barely reaching 50 degrees.
In his second tournament of the season, Hunter Howell, of Raeford, NC came from behind to win his first title of the year. Howell, a past two-time Winternational All-American and ‘05-’06 season Player of the Year, found himself with a 4-shot deficit through 18-holes of play. Dana Spitz, a Winternational newcomer from Chapel Hill, NC, fired an impressive first round 72 to hold the overnight lead through the first round. The lead would be trimmed to 2 through the front nine as Howell was able to string 9 consecutive pars together to go out in 36 strokes. Howell again chipped away at the deficit as Spitz failed to make par on the 10th hole. The lead remained 1-shot through the 12th hole until Spitz ran into problems on the difficult par 3 13th hole. Howell, then took the lead through 13 and never surrender it, finishing his final nine holes in 34 strokes for a 76-70-146 total. Spitz finished in the runner-up position with Nicholas Swenson of Yorktown, VA, also a series newcomer, in third place.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Brandon Jobe of Fayetteville, NC won his second consecutive series event by putting together a very impressive final round of even par 72. His two round total of 80-72-152 was highlighted by a 2 birdie and no bogey front nine score of 34 strokes on his final round. Even more notable was that Jobe, who started in his first round with back-to-back double bogies, was able to rebound and play his next 34 holes in only 4 strokes over par. In runner-up position was Douglass Johnson of Pinehurst, NC.
