KAY, JOBE AND AHN PREVAIL IN EVENT #4
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC
Unseasonably mild weather conditions greeted players this weekend as the Winternational Junior Series played its fifth event of its thirteenth season at Pinehurst. For the second time since its inception, the series was played over 54-holes with Saturday’s and Monday’s first and final rounds being played on the major championship venue, Course No.2, and Sunday’s second round being played on the classic Ross designed No. 3 course.
In the Junior/Senior Division, Andrew Kay of Pittsford, NY fired rounds of 74-69-75 to finish at 218 strokes and dominate his division. After a 1-under par showing on Sunday’s second round, Kay entered final round play on No. 2 with a seven shot lead over eventual runner-up and past Winternational Champion, Taylor Sharber of Florence, SC. After beginning his final round with consecutive pars through the fifth hole, Sharber quickly cut the lead to 5. Not to be outdone, however, Kay would gather himself and play his final 13 holes in just 1-over par, including an even par 36 on the back nine, and finish well clear of his nearest challenger. In third place was Andy Prascak of Carnegie, PA.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Brandon Jobe and Kevin Autry, both of Fayetteville, NC completed 54-holes of play tied at 237 strokes. Through two rounds, Autry found himself three shots clear of Jobe, but would not be able to maintain this advantage as he was caught by Jobe on the eighth hole of the morning’s final round play. The advantage went to both ways for the next 10 holes, but neither was able to best the other through regulation. In the playoff, both players made par on the opening hole to extend the playoff to a 20th hole. On the second hole of the playoff, both Jobe and Autry made bogie to extend the playoff to a 21st hole. In more dramatic fashion, Jobe hit his approach to inside four feet on the par 4 21st hole. Not to be outdone, Autry’s approach landed safely on the green inside 10 feet giving both players excellent birdie opportunities. With Jobe having the advantage, Autry calmly made his birdie, forcing Jobe to convert his. Jobe made his birdie three and forced yet another extra hole. After their tee shots on the fourth playoff hole, both players had opportunities to hit the green of the par 5 in two. Jobe’s attempt landed on the front of the green and Autry’s attempt sailed over the green and came to rest on an awkward downhill lie. Despite the difficult situation, Autry was able to hit the green and put the pressure back on Jobe. Up to the occasion, Jobe rolled in a 60-foot eagle putt to win the division with Autry putting for birdie. Finishing in third was Justin Evans of Spring Lake, NC.
In the Girls Division, Michelle Ahn of Chapel Hill, NC put together a fine 54-hole total of 232 strokes, highlighted by a very impressive final round 1-under par 73 on the No. 2 course. Ahn’s back nine total of 34 included 5 birdies, offset by only two bogies. In second place was series newcomer Brooke Kochevar, of Glen Ellyn, IL.
The Winternational Junior Series will host its sixth event of the season on January 26 through 28 on the Pinehurst Resort’s, Ellis Maples designed No. 5 course.
