WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES CONTESTS SECOND EVENT IN 54-HOLE STROKE PLAY FORMAT

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst played the second event of the 2006-2007 season on this Thanksgiving Weekend.  The first 54-hole stroke play event in the thirteen year history of the Winternationals was held on the Tom Fazio designed No. 4 Course (two rounds) and the sporty Donald Ross designed No. 3 Course (one round).  The entire Championship was played under cloudless skies and balmy, spring-like temperatures.

In the ladies’ division, Desire’ Blaauw of Gouda, The Netherlands, scored an impressive 79-74-75-228 to defeat her nearest competitor, Michelle Ahn, by a comfortable 12-shot margin.  Blaauw, is spending her senior year as an exchange student at The O’neal School in nearby Southern Pines, NC.  After Friday’s opening round, Blaauw was only two shots in front of the eventual runner-up.  Her 2-under par 33 on the front nine of Saturday’s second round opened a gap, which never closed.  Ahn, a sophomore from Chapel Hill, NC recently finished in the top six of the state high school championship.

The freshmen/sophomore boy’s division was the most closely contested of the weekend.  Justin Evans, of nearby Spring Lake, NC, came from 2 shots back after two rounds to defeat joint runners-up Bert Subin and Brandon Jobe.  Subin, of Pinehurst, NC, was the second round leader on the strength of his fine 72 on Saturday’s second round.  The 54-hole event was not decided until the final hole when Evans’ bogey was good enough to hold off both Subin and Jobe.  Evans, a former all-American team member of the Winternational Series, shot 80-76-78–234 for his one shot victory.  Matt DeJohn, of Geneva, NY, shot the low round of the weekend during Sunday’s final round on No. 4 and finished solo fourth.

Michael McGowan, Player of the Year in the 2005-2006 Series won his first start of the current season in fine fashion.  The Southern Pines, NC resident is coming off a fantastic showing in the recent U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine, when he became the youngest competitor in the match play portion of the Championship.  His eight birdies in the 54-hole event staked him to a comfortable win over runner-up Oscar Neubauer of Bethlehem, PA.  McGowan attends the same high school as our aforementioned ladies’ champion, Desire’ Blaauw.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its third event on December 9 through 10 on the Pinehurst Resort’s famed United States Open Venue and Donald Ross Masterpiece Pinehurst No. 2 as well as Pinehurst No. 3.  Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
