WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES BEGINS THIRTEENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR AT PINEHURST RESORT IN NORTH CAROLINA

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

The Winternational Junior Series of Golf, consisting of nine championships for high school age boys and girls, got under way this weekend at the Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, NC.  This series, one of the oldest of its kind in the country, has had over 1200 young men and women pass through its membership since its inception in 1993.  This year three of the nine championships will be contested at 54-holes which marks the first time any Winternational event has extended past two rounds.

As in past years, the high school boys are divided into two divisions, one being for Juniors and Seniors and the other for Freshmen and Sophomores.  A Freshman from Charlotte, NC, Drew Thompson, won the inaugural Freshman/Sophomore Division Championship coasting to a relatively easy twelve shot victory.  Thompson, a student at Charlotte Christian High School, took command of the 36-hole stroke play event by posting a 77 in Saturday’s first round.  His Saturday round was highlighted by his accuracy off the tee and some fine iron play.  Runner-up in the division was Geneva, NY resident Matt DeJohn.  In third place was Pinehurst, NC resident Douglass Johnson.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Winternational newcomer Andy Prascak from Carnegie, PA, was victorious.  Prascak, a senior, had the round of the tournament in the first round on Saturday.  His even par 37-35, 72 on Pinehurst No.5 gave him an overnight, four-shot lead on eventual runner-up Dana Spitz, of Chapel Hill, NC.  Both Prascak and Spitz shot 83 on a blustery but sunny Sunday on Pinehurst No.8.  Prascak finished in the top-10 in the Western Pennsylvania High School Championship and looks forward to a major in Professional Golf Management beginning in the fall of 2007.  In third place was Joe Castle of Pikeville, KY.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event on November 24 through 26 (a 54-hole stroke play event) on the Pinehurst Resort’s famed No. 3 and No. 4 Courses.  Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
