THE WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES AT PINEHURST COMPLETES THE FINAL EVENT OF ITS TWELFTH SEASON

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- March 26, 2006

For the final time in its twelfth season, the Winternational Junior Series convened at Pinehurst. This weekend, the Centennial Pinehurst No. 8, a Tom Fazio design, hosted event #9 in brisk, blustery conditions. Both Saturday’s first round and Sunday’s final round found temperatures in the high-40s to low 50s, with winds gusting 15-20 miles per hour.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Jake Williams of Midlothian VA, posted his third victory in five attempts with a two-day total of 156. Williams, who started and finished his final round with birdies, began the day with a two-shot lead and quickly found his lead increase to seven after seven holes of play. In second place was Kevin MacDonald of Pinebluff, NC who was able to mount a charge after eight holes of play. He would decrease the lead to two by his 16th hole. Williams’ finish of par, birdie, however, would prove insurmountable. Finishing in third was Cory Richards of Florence, SC.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Hunter Howell of Raeford, NC and Taylor Sharber of Florence, SC finished 36 holes in a tie. Both players finished with a two-day total of 154. In a sudden death playoff, Howell and Sharber would par their first hole, but Howell’s steady play would lead to the victory with a par on the second hole. In third place was Sam Williams of Midlothian, VA, who started the final round four shots of the lead. With steady play on his first 12 holes, Williams would pull closer, but Howell’s and Sharber’s final six holes would be too much to overcome.

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will return for its thirteenth season in November. For membership information, future scheduling and results from the 2005-2006 season, please contact Peter DeYoung, series founder, at (910) 295-5661.
