Trahan and McGowan Prevail on Pinehurst’s No. 1 Course

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- February 19, 2006

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst held its seventh event this weekend on Pinehurst’s oldest golf course. Established in 1899 by the world renowned, classic golf course architect, Donald Ross, Pinehurst No. 1 proved a worthy test for the members of this series. On Saturday, the first round was played in ominous conditions, with the temperature rarely reaching 40 degrees and threats of rain and sleet in the forecast. The weather improved slightly for Sunday’s final round with temperatures in the mid-40s and sunny skies.

With a two round total of 153, Chason Trahan of Charlotte, NC held on for a one stroke victory in the Junior/Senior Division. In second place, from Pinebluff, NC, hard charging Kevin MacDonald fell short with a final round 76 and two round total of 154. Starting the round with a three shot advantage, Trahan quickly found his lead disappear as MacDonald pulled even through four holes. The lead would shift four times throughout the round before Trahan’s birdie 3 on his 16th hole secured the lead for good. In third place was Scott Bennett of Laurinburg, NC. Bennett matched MacDonald’s final round 76, but struggled in the difficult conditions of the first round.

In the Freshmen/Sophomore Division, Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC notched his third consecutive win with an impressive even par 70 in the final round. His two-day total of 143 was ten shots better than the nearest competitor. Starting the final round with a slim one shot lead over Justin Evans of Spring Lake, NC, McGowan saw his lead slip away after the first hole when he made bogey 5. He would quickly recover, with solid play, and regain the lead after the third. Evans would threaten again with a birdie 3 on his eighth hole, but McGowan’s front and back nine totals of 35 would prove too much to overcome. In third place was Philip James of Charlotte, NC

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will next come together on March 3-5 when the membership looks forward to revisiting competition on the Fazio designed No. 4 and No. 6 Courses. For further information, please contact Peter DeYoung at (910) 295-5661 or pdeyoung@nc.rr.com
