Howell and Kay Triumph in Back-to-Back Championships

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- February 5, 2006

The sixth event in the Winternational Junior Series of Golf, held at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, NC was contested on two of Donald Ross’ earliest designs. On Saturday, the first round was played on the world-renowned Pinehurst No.2, venue for the Men’s United States Open Championship in 1999 and 2005. Conditions were anything but conducive to scoring, with rain and wind prevalent during the majority of the round. Sunday’s final round was held on Pinehurst No.3, with temperatures approaching 50 degrees with relatively strong winds during the morning’s play.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Andrew Kay of Pittsford, NY followed up his success in his last Championship with a runaway 7-stroke victory in Event #6. As first round leader, Kay started the final round with a 5 shot advantage. Kay’s lead was reduced to four after the first hole, but he quickly regained and extended his lead with steady play. In second place with an 83-77 160 total, was Taylor Christian of Richmond, VA. In an attempt to close the five shot deficit, Chrisitian made birdie 3 on his first hole of the final round, but was unable to pull any closer. Closing with a fine round of 73 and a 2-under back nine, Scott Bennett of Laurinburg, NC recovered from a difficult first round to finish alone in third place.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Hunter Howell of Raeford, NC followed up his superb play in Event #5 with a four shot victory this weekend. Despite a struggle in the early holes of his final round, Howell held off a hard charging Taylor Sharber and finished with a 77-75 152. Sharber of Florence, SC, reduced the lead from 7 to 2 strokes in five holes, but was unable to keep pace with Howell’s solid back-nine play. In third place, Bert Subin from Pinehurst, NC finished with a final round 79 and a 163 total.

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will reconvene on February 17-19 when the membership will take on the Donald Ross designed No. 1 Course. For further information, please contact Peter DeYoung at (910) 295-5661 or peter@juniorgolfpinehurst.com.
