Williams and Howell Victorious in Winternational Fifth Event

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- January 15, 2006

Two young high school boys relied on positive past performances, as they were victorious in the fifth Championship of the current Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst. Both division champions were first round leaders but took distinctly different paths to the winner’s circle. The weekend weather was certainly not conducive to scoring as cold temperatures and strong winds were prevalent each day of the competition.

In the Junior/Senior Division, senior Jake Williams of Midlothian, VA posted a pair of 78s for his 156 winning total. Williams finished the competition with an even par score for his final nine holes while holding off runner-up Cory Richards of Florence, SC. Richards closed within a shot of the champion but a birdie by Williams on his 16th hole determined the outcome. This was Williams’ second win of the season and puts him in the favorites role for Payer of the Year in the Junior/Senior Division. In third place from Pinebluff, NC was Kevin MacDonald, a former All-American in this series.

Last year’s Player of the Year recipient, Hunter Howell of Raeford, NC, continued to show his prowess on the Pinehurst Country Club courses. Howell, a sophomore, went two extra holes to notch his first victory of the year. At the end of regulation play he was tied with newcomer Philip James of Charlotte, NC with 36 hole totals of 159 totals. Both players pared the first extra hole, but Howell prevailed on the second when he was able to make par from a fairway bunker. In third place, from Pinebluff, NC was Stefan Streckfus.

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst will reconvene on Feburary 3-5 when the membership will again test the Donald Ross masterpiece No. 2 Course. For further information, please contact Peter DeYoung at (910) 295-5661 or pdeyoung@nc.rr.com.
