KAY AND SHARBER VICTORIOUS AT FAZIO'S PINEHURST No. 6

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- January 8, 2006

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst held the fourth Championship in the nine tournament series this past weekend. Tom Fazio’s Pinehurst No. 6 was the venue on a cool, breezy Saturday and a mild, pleasant Sunday. The golf course, which has hosted the finals of the PGA Tour’s Qualifying School, was played at a par 71 and 6542 Yards.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Andrew Kay of Pittsford, NY was victorious. Kay trailed first round leader Cory Richards of Florence, SC by five shots. In the second round the junior from suburban Rochester birdied his first hole and caught Richards on the eleventh with another birdie, which put him two under for the day. His 77-72, 149 total gave him a 2 shot victory over runner-up Taylor Christian of Richmond, VA. The aforementioned Richards, whose first round 72 tied for low round of the tournament, finished solo third with a 152 total. Kay, a two-year member of the Winternational Series, finished in the top-five of the New York State High School Championship.

Sophomore Taylor Sharber also of Florence, SC dominated the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Sharber took a three shot first round lead and never looked back on Sunday as he ran away with a ten shot victory. Sharber’s Sunday round was highlighted by two back-nine birdies. Aaron Boggs of Madison, WV was second with a 167 total. In third place from Pinebluff, NC was Stefan Streckfus.

The fifth Championship will be held next weekend on the Ellis Maples designed No. 5 Course at the Pinehurst Country Club. Please contact Peter DeYoung at (910) 295-5661 or pdeyoung@nc.rr.com for further information.
