WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES COMPETES ON HISTORIC PINEHURST No. 2

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- December 18, 2005

On a weekend, which found temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to mid-40s, 21 members of the Winternational Junior Series contested the third tournament of the season. The venue for this Championship included Saturday’s 1st Round on the Donald Ross designed No. 2 Course which served as the venue for the 2005 United States Open Championship. On Sunday, the field moved to the original Pinehurst No. 1 Course, which opened in 1899.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC made it back-to-back victories with a three shot win over hard charging runner-up Justin Evans. McGowan had the low round in Saturday’s first round on the No. 2 Course, with a 5-over par 76. His 76 on Sunday held off Evans who birdied three of the last five holes for his second round 73. Not to be outdone, McGowan also birdied three of the last five holes to secure the victory. In third place, from Florence, SC, with scores of 79-78, for a 157, was Taylor Sharber.

The Junior/Senior Division saw an extremely tight finish. Chason Trahan of Charlotte, NC trailed overnight leader Rob Allen, also from Charlotte, by six shots. On the final nine holes, Trahan strung together eight consecutive fours and a final Par 3 for an incoming nine of 35. This, coupled with his 38 on the front nine, gave him a 73 and a 157 total. The leaders, playing two groups back, faltered in the end to give Trahan the victory. Joint runners-up were Jake Williams of Midlothian, VA and Matt Stasiak of Clarence, NY with totals of 158. Stasiak had his problems on the par-3 finishing hole when he scored a double bogey, and Williams made 6 on the relatively easy par-5 17th hole. Both fell one shot short of a playoff for the Championship. In fourth place was Andrew Kay of Pittsford, NY with an 83-76, 159 total. With his victory this weekend, Trahan, who is a past All-American team member of the Winternational Junior Series, recorded his first win.

The Winternational Junior Series will continue on January 7th when the Fourth Event will be contested on the recently redesigned and renovated, Tom and George Fazio No. 6 Course at Pinehurst Resort. For further information contact Peter de Young at pdeyoung@nc.rr.com or (910) 295-5661.
