WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES DERAILED BY INCLEMENT WEATHER

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA -- November 27, 2005

The Second Event in the Winternational Series of nine 36-Hole Golf Championships was held at the Pinehurst Resort over Thanksgiving weekend. 21 members participated on the Tom Fazio designed No. 4 Course which played to a yardage of 6658 and a par of 72. After an overcast, cool opening Saturday, the field was called in by the committee when the course was deemed unplayable after an all day rain on Sunday. The overnight leaders were named winners. In the Junior/Senior Division, the Champion was Jake Williams, a senior from Midlothian, VA. Williams, shot a 79 on Saturday for a 3-shot lead, which turned into his margin of victory. His 1 over par 37 on Saturday’s final nine carried him to victory. Louis Lapos, of Sheffield Village, OH, captured the runner-up position with an 82. Two young men tied for third with an 84, Justin Sellin of Bolivar, MO and Landon Palay of Pepper Pike, OH.

The Freshman/Sophomore Division saw a similar finish in this event as in the first, with the only difference being the top two positions in the final tally were reversed. This week, Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC shot a tournament low round of 77 on Saturday to edge last event’s champion Justin Evans of Spring Lake, NC by 1 shot. On their final hole in the first round, a two-shot swing occurred when Evans birdied and McGowan bogied, but McGowan’s birdie on 17 proved the final margin of victory. McGowan, son of Champion Tour player Pat McGowan, made this Championship his first victory in two years of membership on the Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst. In third place was Bert Subin, of Pinehurst, NC, with an 81.

The Winternational Junior Series will continue on December 17th when Event #2 will be contested on the historic No. 2 Course. For further information contact Peter deYoung at (910) 295-5661.
