WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES BEGINS TWELFTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR AT PIENHURST RESORT IN NORTH CAROLINA

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA - November 13, 2005

The Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst (formerly Nike Winternationals) began its twelfth consecutive year at the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina. This series of nine golf tournaments is open to high school boys and girls and has had a membership of over 1500 in the past eleven years. The season opening tournament was held this past weekend on the Tom Fazio designed No.8 course. The 36-hole Championship was contested under perfect weather conditions consisting of sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.

Matt Stasiak, a 16-year-old high school junior from Clarence, NY, was victorious in the Junior/Senior Boys Division. He shot a 73-76, 149 total to coast to an eight shot victory in the inaugural event. Stasiak’s first round was marked by his steady play of 13 pars, 2 birdies, and 3 bogies. The junior from outside Buffalo was never threatened on Sunday as he played his first nine holes in even par. In runner-up position in the Junior/Senior Division, was Kevin MacDonald of Pinebluff, North Carolina. MacDonald was an All-American selection in this series last year. In third place, highlighted by his first career hole-in-one in Sunday’s second round, was Taylor Christian of Richmond, VA. Christian scored 78-81 for a total 159.

The Freshman/Sophomore Division was by three local players all of whom played well in the Winternational Series last year. Justin Evans of Spring Lake, NC, a freshman, scored 75-75, 150 for his five shot victory in the division. In the 36-hole event, Evans scored nine 3s and a 2 to outdistance joint runners-up Mike McGowan of Southern Pines and Hunter Howell of Raeford. Both Howell and McGowan scored 155 totals for the 36 holes. In fourth place from Madison, West Virginia, was Aaron Boggs with a 79-79, 158.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event on November 26 and 27 on the Pinehurst Resort’s No.4 Course. Please contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 for further information.
