Young and Trahan Claim Victory in 8th Event of Winternational Series
Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina - March 6, 2005

The Winternational Junior Series of Golf completed its eighth event of the 2004-2005 series this weekend on Pinehurst No. 4. The Tom Fazio design opened in 1999 and will be the site of the 2008 United States Amateur Championship along with Pinehurst No. 2. The 6658 yard par 72 layout proved difficult with 20 – 25 mph winds and gusts above 30.

In the Junior/Senior Boy’s division, Joshua Alan Young of Greenbrier, TN collected his first victory of the season with a 36-hole total of 154. Young carded a first round 75 to take a commanding14 stroke lead. Young’s first round included five birdies in the brisk conditions. During Sunday’s final round, Young was never seriously challenged as he recorded three birdies in four holes on the homeward nine. In second place was Spencer Percy of Statesville, NC with a 36-hole total of 166. In third was Ryan Gersch of Giddings, TX at 172. In fourth was Chris Melone of West End, NC at 187 and in fifth place at 190 was Carmen Cellura of Penfield, NY.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Boy’s division, Chason Trahan of Charlotte, NC carded a final round 78 to retain his first round lead and to claim his first victory of the season. Trahan had matching 39’s in Sunday’s round where he took advantage of the par 5’s playing the three under par. Trahan finished with a five-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC who had a 164 total. In third was Kevin MacDonald of Pinebluff, NC at 167.

The final event of the 2004 – 2005 series will be March 18 – 20 at the newly reopened Course No. 6. Divisional Player of the Year and All-American honors will be announced at the conclusion of the tournament. For more information please contact Hank Thompson at 910-235-8140.
