Mielke, Quinn, Carr Victorious at Pinehurst #8 in Event #7 at Pinehurst
Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina - February 20, 2005

Pinehurst No. 8 was the site of the 7th event of the 2004-05 Winternational Junior Series of Golf. The weekend brought temperatures in the upper 40’s and light showers during Sunday’s final round.

In the Junior/Senior Boy’s division, Matt Mielke of Matthews, NC wrapped up at least a tie for the Player of the Year honors with his fourth victory of the season. Mielke overcame a three shot deficit after 18 holes of play. Mielke’s final round was bogey free. The only blemish on the cards was a double bogey 7 on the par five 11th hole. Mielke quickly followed up with a birdie to finish with a one over par 73. His 36-hole total of 150 was one shot clear of runner-up Joe Poole, Jr. of Raeford, NC. Poole shot 75-76-151 to finish in solo second. Poole would need to win the remaining two events to force a tie for the Player of the Year honors in the Junior/Senior division. Allan Autry of Fayetteville, NC finished third at 156. Tied for fourth were Mike Schwert of Rochester, NY and Taylor Christian, V of Richmond, VA.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Boy’s division, Ramsay Quinn of Wilmington, NC won his second consecutive event. Quinn’s first round 78 was two shots better than Andrew Kay of Pittsford, NY. Kay was able to reduce Quinn’s lead to one after their fourth hole when Quinn bogeyed the par three 8th hole. Quinn was able to reestablish his initial lead and stretch it to four in the middle of the round. Kay and Quinn shot matching 79’s in the final round for the final two shot margin of victory. Kay finished the tournament at 159. In third was Pinebluff’s Kevin MacDonald who finished with a 161 total.

In the Girl’s division, Corrine Carr of Pinehurst, NC won her second event of the series. Carr’s consistent play over the weekend helped her to a 16-stroke margin of victory. Carr’s total was 154. In second place was Katherine Murphy of Portsmouth, RI with a 170 total. In third was Kelly Butler of Centerburg, OH.

The 8th event of the series will be held March 4 – 6 on Pinehurst No. 4. For additional details please contact Hank Thompson at 910-235-8140.
