Poole, Quinn, and Carr Victorious in Event #6
Village of Pinehurst North Carolina - February 6, 2005

The sixth event of the 2004-05 Winternational Junior Series of Golf was contested this weekend at Pinehurst. High school boys and girls competed on two Donald Ross designs. Saturday’s first round was on the 1999 and 2005 US Open Championship site, Course No. 2, and Sunday’s final round was on Course No. 3. Temperatures were in the low to mid 50’s each day with light winds.

In the Junior/Senior Boy’s Division, Joe Poole, Jr. of Raeford, NC won his second event in a row. In four of six events Poole has finished first or second. After Saturday’s opening round, Poole found himself with a four shot lead over Matt Mielke of Matthews, NC. Mielke came into this event having won all three events he has competed in. Poole fired a one under par 70 on Course No. 2. Poole’s card included three birdies and an eagle. His eagle came on the par five 10th hole when he holed out his third shot from a greenside bunker. After the first hole of Sunday’s final round, Poole never lost his four shot advantage and finished with a 36 hole total of 146. Finishing second was Josh Young of Greenbrier, TN with a 76-74-150 total. Mielke finished third at 153, Jeffrey Hinds of Pittsburgh, PA finished fourth at 158, and Mike Schwert of Rochester, NY finished 5th with a 159 total.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, newcomer Ramsay Quinn of Wilmington, NC staked himself to ten-stroke lead after posting a one over par 72 on Course No. 2. Quinn’s outward nine included two birdies for a one under 34. Quinn never looked back, adding distance to his first round lead and finishing with a 12 shot victory on Sunday. Quinn finished the tournament with a 145 total and took home the event champion crown as well. Tied for second were Andrew Kay of Pittsford, NY and Kurt Voss of Rochester, NY with 157 totals.

In the Girls Division, Corrine Carr claimed victory posting a 157 total for the weekend. Runner-up, Katherine Murphy of Portsmouth, RI finished at 180.
