Mielke and Howell Victorious Again in Event #4
Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina - January 9, 2005

The fourth event of the Winternational Junior Series of Golf was contested this weekend on the Pinehurst No. 5 Course. The field enjoyed unseasonably warm weather while testing the Ellis Maples design.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Matt Mielke of Charlotte, NC continued his dominance over the division. Mielke has claimed three victories in as many appearances. Mielke recorded a first round 77 to take an overnight lead with his closest competitor three shots behind. In Sunday’s final round Mielke’s margin of victory did not change even with a quintuple bogey on the 17th hole. Andrew Guthrie made a gallant effort recording a tournament low round of 74 to finish in second three shots behind. The native of Winnetka, IL was joined by Joe Poole of Raeford, NC who shot a final round 78 to finish with a 36-hole total of 159. In fourth was Justin Sellin of Bolivar, MO and in 5th Chris Melone of West End, NC.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Hunter Howell won his second event by carding a first round 73 and following that up with a final round 79. Howell was three shots clear of Kevin McDonald of Pinebluff, NC beginning the second round. Howell of Raeford, NC stretched his lead to five shots after the first nine holes. MacDonald cut he deficit to two shots after making birdie on the 10th and par on the 11th, but a double bogey on the 14th ended MacDonald’s run at title. MacDonald finished five strokes back at 157. In third place was Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC at 159.

The next event will be held on Pinehurst No. 1. The dates are January 14 – 16, 2005. For more information please contact Peter de Young at 910-295-5661.
