Junior Golfers Compete on Pinehurst No. 2
Village of Pinehurst, NC - December 12, 2004

In a weekend which found the weather changing from overcast, rainy, and blustery during Saturday’s first round to a clear, cloudless second round Sunday, thirty-two high school golfers competed on two Donald Ross gems. The No. 2 Course at Pinehurst has hosted more major championships than any golf course in the United States and will be the venue for the 2005 U.S. Open. These high school players played the Donald Ross masterpiece at 6,845 yards with a par of 72. The original Course No. 1 was used for Sunday’s final round.

The Champion of the Junior/Senior boy’s division, and the overall event Champion, was Andrew Cohen of Mamaroneck, NY. Andrew, a newcomer, showed great consistency during the opening round when winds blew 15-20 miles per hour with light rain. Cohen broke out of a overnight tie with Joe Poole, Jr. of Raeford, NC when both players shot three over par 75. Paired together for the final round Cohen opened with a birdie but fell behind the former All-American from Raeford when Poole birdied four of the next eight holes. The New York resident was victorious by a single shot when Poole bogeyed 14 and 15 and Andrew birdied 16 for the difference. In third place with an 80-73-153 was Allen Autry of Fayetteville, NC. Tied for fourth were Matthew Hammock of Hinesville, GA and Spencer Percy of Statesville, NC with scores of 156.

In the Freshman/Sophomore boy’s division, David Chung of Fayetteville, NC won his second divisional title of the young season. His 37-36-73 first round not only gave him a seven shot lead in the division but was also the low score of all competitors. Chung, a freshman and runner-up in the 2004 U.S. Junior Boy’s Championship held on for a five shot win in Sunday’s finale. Runner-up was Hunter Howell of Raeford, NC who scored 80-73-153. Howell, with two double bogeys offset by four birdies claimed the runner-up position over New York, NY Zachary Plutzik.

In the Girl’s division Jessica Chung of Fayetteville, NC shot 95-93-188.

The fourth event of the series will be contested on Course No. 5 January 7-9, 2005. For more information please contact Peter de Young at 910-295-5661.
