Hunter Howell, Matt Mielke, and Julie Miller victorious at Pinehurst Centennial #8
Village of Pinehurst, NC - November 28, 2004

The second event of the 2004-2005 Winternational season was held this weekend on the Centennial course, Pinehurst No. 8 a Tom Fazio design. Thirty of the over 100 members, boys and girls from 30 states, all high-school students, participated. Overcast skies and a frost delay greeted participants on Saturday, but Sunday dawned cloudless but proved difficult because of afternoon gusts. This season marks the 11th consecutive year that Pinehurst has hosted the Winternational Series.

In the Freshman/Sophomore division, Hunter Howell of Raeford, NC put together rounds of 73 and 77 for his two shot victory over Virginia Beach, VA resident, Scott Saal. Howell, birdied the 15th and 16th hole during the final round for his margin of victory. He played his final nine in three under par. In third place with a score of 80-79-159 was Michael McGowan of nearby Southern Pines, NC.

Matt Mielke, the winner of this series’ first event two weeks ago, began this 36-hole stroke play event with a start which could only be described as catastrophic. After incurring a two-stroke penalty for being late for his appointed start time, Mielke discovered a 15th club in his bag before completing the first hole. His subsequently recorded an eight (quadruple bogey) and was four over par with 35 holes remaining. Mielke of Matthews, NC, showed tremendous perseverance in playing the remaining holes at two over par, but was forced to go overtime for the win. Joe Poole Jr., of Raeford, NC, matched Mielke’s total with a 76-74-150. The two seniors then went two extra holes before Mielke made a regulation par four to claim his win. Mielke now takes a commanding lead in the divisional player of the year chase. In third with a score of 74-80-154 of Allan Autry of Fayetteville, NC; fourth place was claimed by Orange Park, FL senior Joshua Kinsey; and 5th place was awarded to Joshua Hobbs of McKinney, TX.

In the Girl’s division, newcomber Julie Miller of Jeannette, PA was victorious over runner-up Jessica Chung of Fayetteville, NC. Miller, nursed a two shot first round lead and stretched her advantage to four after 27 holes and 10 by the conclusion of the championship.

will continue December 10 – 12 with it’s third tournament in the series of nine. The next championship will be played on Course No. 2, the site of the 1999 and 2005 United States Open Championship. For more information please contact Peter de Young at 910-295-5661.
