WINTERNATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES BEGINS 11th SEASON AT VENERABLE PINEHURST COUNTRY CLUB
Village of Pinehurst, NC – November 14, 2004

For the 11th straight year, the Winternational Junior Series of Golf will play its nine tournament series at the venerable and historic Pinehurst Country Club. Next year Pinehurst will host the U.S. Open Championship in June on the Donald Ross designed No. 2 course. Over 100 boys and girls attending high school, have attained membership and are eligible to play in any or all of the events. The weather for this first event was brisk and breezy with temperatures hovering in the 40’s for both morning rounds. Competition was conducted on Tom Fazio’s Course No. 4.

The Junior/Senior boy’s division was won by Matthews, NC resident Matt Mielke with a fine one over par total of 145. Mielke, a senior, won his first event by three shots over All-American (last year) Joshua Kinsey. Kinsey, from Orange Park, FL, took a one shot lead after Saturday’s first round but was caught and passed when the Champion made birdie two on the fourth hole. Mielke, survived Joshua’s three birdies on the back nine for his ultimate win. In third place was Mike Cosentino of Morrisville, NC with a 74-75-149 total. In fourth place was Danny Dolan of Lake Forest, IL and in fifth was Joshua Young of Greenbrier, TN.

The Freshman/Sophomore boy’s division was dominated by young David Chung, a ninth grader from nearby Fayetteville, NC. David shot 73-77 for a 150 total and a seven shot victory. Chung, 14 years old, was the runner-up at the US Junior Championship in San Francisco last year and was the youngest finalist in the history of that Championship. Chung’s 73 in the opening round on Saturday was even more remarkable considering the 20 miles per hour wind with gust to 30 miles per hour. Runner-up in this division was Scott Saal of Virginia Beach, VA with 81-76-157 total, and third place was captured by Chasan Trahan of Charlotte, NC.

Since both divisions of the boys played the same championship tees, the Committee will award an overall Champion of each event.

In the Girls’ division, a newcomer, Brooke Pancake of Chattanooga, TN captured her first victory. After opening with a fine 79 and a four shot lead after the opening round, Brooke cruised to victory on Sunday. Pancake, a freshman, was two under par for the eight par 3’s played in the two-day event. Runner-up in the division was Jessica Chung from Fayetteville, NC.

The second event will be played November 26-28, 2004 at The Centennial Pinehurst No. 8. For more information please call Peter de Young at 910-295-5661.
