Winternational Junior Series of Golf Names Divisional Player of the Year Winners and All-American Team

Village of Pinehurst, NC- The 11th Annual Winternational Junior Series of Golf concluded its season today at Pinehurst. 110 high school boys and girls were members during the 2004-2005 season. The Winternational, a nine tournament series, has been based in Pinehurst since it’s inception and conducts championships on all eight of Pinehurst’s Championship layouts. Competition is held in three separate divisions, Junior/Senior Boys, Freshman/Sophomore Boys, and Girls.

In the Junior/Senior boy’s division, Matt Mielke of Matthews, NC claimed the Player of the Year honors. Mielke won four of the five events he competed in this year. In the only event he did not win, Mielke finished third. The three-year veteran posted wins in the first two events marking his initial victories in the Winternationals. Mielke will be a freshman at Wofford College this fall and will compete on the men’s golf team.

In the Freshman/Sophomore boy’s division, Hunter Howell of nearby Raeford, NC won the Player of the Year honors. Howell combined two victories and two runner-up finishes to claim the honor. Howell, a freshman and first year member, won the second and fourth event of the series to set the early pace for post season honors.

Jessica Chung of Fayetteville, NC captured the Girl’s division Player of the Year honors. Chung combined one victory with three runner-up finishes. Chung, a rising high school freshman, was named Player of the Year in her inaugural season.
